Differences Between Latex, Butyl Rubber and Synthetic Rubber (SR) Bladders

The inner bladder is one of the important factors of a soccer ball, affecting various aspects of the ball, including air pressure, bounce height, flight trajectory, structure, and weight. Soccer balls usually have three types of inner bladders—latex inner bladders, butyl inner bladders, and rubber inner bladders. These three types of inner bladders play a crucial role in the use of soccer balls.

Latex bladders are soft, lively, and elastic, so they are particularly commonly used in high-end balls. With a latex bladder, you can get touch and feel of the ball. However, latex bladders have a problem: they cannot retain air for a long time and need to be reinflated more frequently than butyl bladders. Some manufacturers are looking for ways to solve this problem; currently, they add a butyl valve to the latex bladder to help retain air, but the effect is not yet clear.

2. Butyl Rubber Bladder – Regular Matches/Club Training

Butyl bladders have much stronger air retention capacity, but their weight and hardness are only slightly higher than those of latex bladders. Although they are not as comfortable as latex bladders, they have better structural retention and can remain inflated for several weeks. They are suitable for balls that need to be used continuously in daily fitness or club training, thanks to their air retention and durability. Butyl bladders are made of a mixture of butyl and rubber. According to the butyl content, they are mainly divided into 30% butyl bladders, 50% butyl bladders, and 80% butyl bladders. The higher the butyl content, the better the overall performance of the bladder.

3. Synthetic Rubber (SR) Bladder – Training/Entertainment

Rubber bladders are the widely used bladders in low-end soccer balls because they are faster to produce and lower in cost. They have better air retention than latex bladders but are less durable than butyl bladders. Rubber bladders are usually used in combination with a wrapped carcass to provide long-lasting structure and air retention, thereby ensuring service life.
